Keeping AR art alive when platforms don't stay alive.
Three major AR platforms died within eighteen months: Adobe Aero (support ended November 2025), Meta's Spark AR (2025), and 8th Wall, whose hosted content goes permanently offline in February 2027. Each shutdown stranded published artwork — the prints survived, the experiences didn't. If your art lives on walls, in collections, or in customers' hands, platform mortality is a design constraint, not a footnote.
What actually happens when a platform dies
The announcement gives a deadline. Until it, everything works; after it, QR codes resolve to nothing, viewer apps vanish from stores, and editor logins stop. Artists in Aero's end-of-support thread described murals with painted QR codes that would soon activate nothing, years of coursework built on a dead tool, and client contracts turned down for fear of building on sand. 8th Wall's wind-down gave hosted WebAR projects one year of grace — February 2026 to February 2027 — before every link stops working and data is deleted. The pattern isn't malice; platforms are businesses. But the print outlives the platform's business model, and that mismatch lands on the artist.
The three questions that predict survival
An app dies with its store listing. Browser-delivered AR (WebAR) rides on web standards that no single vendor can discontinue — the safest doorway that exists.
Shutdowns are the dramatic case; the mundane one is caps and cancellations. Some platforms deactivate artwork when free-tier views run out or a subscription lapses. Prefer platforms where published work never deactivates — Interart's rule is that no cap or plan change ever stops a published piece from playing.
The artwork file, the video layers, the composition idea — if you keep your sources, rebuilding on another platform is an afternoon per piece, not a loss. Never let the only copy of a layer live inside someone's editor.

What a published Interart piece is, physically

A published design is stored as ordinary web files: the rectified artwork image, each media layer, the scene as data (drawings are stored as strokes, not rendered to video), and a precomputed tracking file the phone matches against. The viewer is a static web application; detection, tracking and compositing run on the viewer's phone, in the browser, and camera frames do not leave the device. Playback consists of file delivery plus one small metadata read — no server renders the scene. Published work is not deactivated at caps or on plan changes. The two failure modes that ended Aero-hosted and 8th Wall-hosted work — a required app removed from stores, and hosted scene rendering switched off — do not have an equivalent here; the remaining risk is the ordinary one, that the files stop being served, which is why keeping your own copies matters.
The honest caveat
No platform — including this one — can promise immortality. What a platform can do is remove the engineered ways art dies: app-store dependency, deactivation at caps, asset lock-in.
